Toyota Hydrogen Centre

August 5, 2024 Faisal Wani

Project: Hydrogen Centre

Client: Toyota Motor Corporation Australia

Value: $1M

The Toyota hydrogen testing facility in Australia is a groundbreaking project, the creation, storage, and dispensing of

hydrogen. As the first of its kind for Toyota in Australia and one of only three in the country at the time, it presented

unique challenges and requirements.

The contract encompassed all aspects of construction, from civil and infrastructure work to concrete laying and equipment

installation. One of the key features was the underground bare copper earthing system, ensuring safety and protection

for all equipment , connected to lightening catchers, mounted to external perimeter and adjoining buildings.

A complex network of multiple services was exactly planned and installed underground, including hydrogen lines,

electrical conduits, communications cables, water and stormwater systems.

Building during the Covid-19 pandemic added further challenges, requiring strict adherence to health and safety protocols

to protect the workforce and ensure uninterrupted progress.

Custom pits and underground concrete works were essential components, requiring extra heavy-duty triple-layer steel

and fiber-reinforced 40Mpa concrete. Precision was paramount, with construction control joints placed with utmost

accuracy to ensure structural performance.

Working within a limited space and amidst ongoing operations demanded careful coordination and communication to

minimize disruptions and maintain safety standards.

The project’s stringent requirements extended to concrete tolerance, with tolerances set at +\ - 2mm to meet the

facility’s equipment standards. Despite these challenges, the Toyota hydrogen testing facility stands as a testament to

innovation and engineering excellence in advancing sustainable transportation technologies.
